BIM shouldn’t be seen as a a discipline in the same light as scheduling or Quality, or worse shouldn't be seen as a heading that sits within a discipline such as deisgn. BIM is encompassed into everything we do on a project. It is a suite of processes and tools which allow our industry to become more efficient.
What is it?
Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a general term that describes the overall process of creating and managing digital information relating to constructed assets. A Building Information Model (BIM) provides the opportunity of virtually constructing a building before it is built. This provides a greater insight into the buildability of a project and highlights elements of a building which may be problematic to construct.
How do we digitalise it?
For those either vaguely familiar or completely unfamilar with Building Information Modelling (BIM) you would be forgiven to think it is simply a software which improves visuals and de-risks the impacts on budget & program of the design and construction project, of which it does a decent job, when used correctly. But BIM is much more. It is intrinsic to every discipline and stakeholder on the project. It has manifested itself to be closely releated to the overall strategy and PMO of the entire organisation. Correct utilisation of BIM involves using the latest technologies and processes to enable your busienss to be more competitivly advantageous and in better control of performance and acheiving your goals.
